The updated statement, which took nearly six hours to finalize, now commits the organization to “fostering innovative, collaborative, sustainable, transformational economic prosperity through strategic partnerships and stakeholder alignment.”
Sources confirmed nobody could fully explain what changed from the previous mission statement.
“I think we replaced ‘enhance’ with ‘foster,’” said Board Chair Michael McGowan while reviewing the final document. “There was also strong support for adding the word transformational because it feels more proactive.”

The retreat reportedly began positively with networking coffee and a presentation titled Positioning Ourselves For Tomorrow’s Economy before deteriorating during a breakout session on governance and board-related priorities.
Attendees became visibly tense after facilitators asked participants to describe “one opportunity for organizational improvement,” leading to several comments that were technically professional, but emotionally devastating.
Witnesses say the atmosphere worsened when one board member suggested meetings could be “more action-oriented,” a statement widely interpreted as a direct attack on at least three people in the room.
Meanwhile, another participant spent 45 uninterrupted minutes explaining why the organization’s logo “doesn’t embody regional momentum.”
To improve collaboration, consultants guided attendees through an exercise involving sticky notes, flip charts, and placing colored dots beside strategic priorities nobody intends to revisit until next year’s retreat.
